Helen's Bookshelf is one of the quieter sites in this collection, and one of the
most carefully kept. There is no animated graphic, no <blink> tag,
no guestbook — only a hand-numbered list of books, the date each was finished, and
a single sentence of comment, no longer or shorter than the previous one. The page
is set against a marbled background tile of the kind one would have found in a
thousand other personal pages of the period, but the discipline of the typography
elevates it.
I came across it by accident, searching the GeoCities mirror at the Internet Archive for something else entirely 1. It is dated from the spring of 1996 and updated, by my count, on 38 separate occasions across the following six years. The final entry, made in November 2002, reads simply: “A quiet year. Less reading than I would like. Begin again.”
What makes the page interesting is not its visual design — which is unremarkable — but the editorial restraint. Helen's comments are never longer than a sentence and never shorter than one. They do not summarise the books; they record the reader's relationship to them. There is something formalist about this: a self-imposed constraint kept up for six years without apparent strain.

This is the only sort of personal-website-keeping I am still drawn to, twenty-five years later — the kind whose pleasures are entirely internal to its maker, and whose public legibility is incidental. The web at large has not made more of these. It has made fewer.
The colour scheme is a single shade of dark green over the marbled background, which would have read poorly on the CRT monitors of the period but reads beautifully now. The type is the browser default — Times New Roman on a Windows machine — and the line length is uncomfortably wide, as was almost universal until the late 1990s. Helen made no apparent attempt to constrain it, and the result is that, on a modern monitor, the text spills across the screen in a way that demands a wider attention than today's reader is accustomed to giving.
For preservation purposes, I have kept the original CSS intact. The page is best viewed at roughly the resolution of the era — 800 × 600, or close to it.
The site was accessioned to the archive on 2 April 2026 after three months of
intermittent re-reading. Catalogue notes are stored in refs/047.txt.
Where I have been able to find later writing by Helen — under either her real name
or her several pseudonyms — I have noted it in the marginalia file.
